1404 Corporal Henry Newlands, 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles. From Prahran, Stonnington, Victoria, Australia. A station hand. Volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. On 12 Jun 1901 he was part of a 350 strong flying force under Major Morris, Royal Artillery, undertaking a 2 day sweep that camped on the farm Wilmansrust, thirty two kilometres south of Middelburg. They were attacked in the evening by a strong Boer force. The 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles suffered about 18 killed and 36 wounded. Corporal Newlands was one of those killed in the action. After General Beatson criticised the Australians, an international incident started between the UK and Australia and an inquiry was held. All the soldiers who died were buried together in a communal grave on the battlefield. Their remains were later reinterred at Middelburg. He is also commemorated on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour at Treloar Crescent, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia; on the Ballarat Boer War Memorial in Queen Victoria Square, Sturt Street, Ballarat, Central Highlands, Victoria, Australia (see: https://vwma.org.au/explore/memorials/2600) and on the 5th Contingent Victorian Mounted Rifles memorial at Kings Domain, St Kilda Road & Government House Drive, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (see: https://vwma.org.au/explore/memorials/3082).
