4024 Private A Dance, 2nd Battalion the (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Royal Berkshire Regiment. The Battalion was in Cape Colony when the war commenced and was deployed in the Molteno district of the Cape Colony. Although they had been deployed at Stormberg, they were not part of the failed attempt to attack Boer positions in the area on 10 Dec 1899. They were part of the advance to Bloemfontein in Feb-Mar 1900. The battalion took part in the operations for the relief of Wepener about 20-23 Apr, but had no serious fighting. During Lord Roberts' advance towards Pretoria they were chiefly employed guarding the lines of communication. By Jul 1900 they joined a new brigade and were involved in much fighting north-west of Pretoria. On 2 Aug 1900 they approached Uitval Nek finding it strongly held by the enemy. Two companies of the Berkshire Regiment gallantly escaladed the steep cliff overlooking the pass from the east forcing the enemy top flee. The battalion's losses were 3 killed, and 32 wounded. In Dec 1900 the battalion formed the garrison of various posts in the Wonderfontein-Pan district. Private Dance died from self inflicted wounds (suicide) at Pan, a railway station about 20km east of Middelburg, mid way between Middelburg and Wonderfontein. He is also commemorated on the Royal Berkshire Regiment Boer War memorial in St Georges Church, St Georges Road, Reading, Berkshire, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/12817).
