Grafton Baker was named after his paternal grandfather, Grafton Baker (1774-1849), a veteran of the War of 1812. Young Grafton was the eldest son and second child (of 6) of parents James Baker (1816-1865) and his wife Louisa (Slight) Baker (1820-1889) of Hancock County, Ohio.

Grafton served in the Union Army in the Civil War in Company G of the Ohio 118th Infantry Regiment. He was killed in the Battle of Resaca on May 14, 1864 in the opening of the Atlanta Campaign.

Hancock County, Ohio records state that Grafton's body was buried, along with fellow soldiers, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. However, to date, his burial site, among the many thousands, has not been located.
