Charles Norris Dies of Injuries In Farm Accident

Charles R. Norris, age 76 of Scammon, died this morning at 9:18 o'clock in the City Hospital where he was admitted yesterday afternoon after receiving injuries in a tractor accident.

Mr. Norris had been helping a son with farm work and was hoeing corn when the accident occurred. He was found in a hedgerow near the field by a passerby who notified his son, Russell Norris, of Cherokee route one. The son brought him to the hospital.

Mr. Norris was unable to tell his son what had happened but he apparently had been dragged by the farm equipment across the field and into the hedgerow. The tractor and hoe had passed on through the hedge and were found a quarter of a mile away.

Mr. Norris was born May 22, 1887, in St. Clair, Mo., the son of Howard and Martha Norris. At the age of 17 he moved to Scammon. He and Alice Makings of Turck were married April 10, 1907, at Columbus. She preceded him in death Aug. 5, 1954.

On Sept. 1, 1955, he married Mrs. Anna Selle of Treece and they made their home in Scammon. Mr. Norris retired from the Kansas State Highway Department in June 1954. He had also been a coal miner and a farmer.

He attended the Fire Baptized Holiness Church.

Survivors, besides the wife, are: three sons, Floyd Norris, Westfir, Ore., Vernie Norris, Columbus route two, and Russell Norris of Cherokee route one; three daughters, Mrs. Florence Wilson, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Opal Wilson, Columbus and Mrs. Lillie Mae Mays of Pittsburg; two stepsons, Edmond Selle, Treece and Robert Selle, Springfield, Mo.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Peace, Bonner Springs, Kans., and Mrs. Jody Woods of Picher; three sisters, Mrs. Nett McDonald, Marissa, Ill., Mrs. Angie Norris, Collins, Mo., and Mrs. Nettie Repass of Pittsburg; 22 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

The body was received by the Ruhland-Murdock Funeral Home at Columbus.
