On April 8, 2022, the Angel of God whispered, "Catherine, come now and take your
rest."
Sister Catherine "Cat" Coleman Smith departed this life on Friday, April 8, 2022, at the age of 92.
She was born December 30, 1929, in Chickasaw, AL; to Susanna Clark-Coleman and Fletcher Coleman, Sr.
She was reared in Prichard, AL; with her six siblings. They all attended Macedonia Baptist Church, where she served as Secretary of the Sunday School, sang in the Youth Choir, and served on the Usher Board for many years.
She received her early education at Ella Grant Elementary School and received her high school diploma from Mobile County Training School. Mrs. Smith continued her education at Bishop State Community College where she received an associate's degree in Cosmetology and later attended The University of South Alabama where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Business.
She was employed with Booker T. Washington Insurance Company for over ten years at the Prichard Branch. She retired from the Mobile County School System after thirty years of working in the Accounting Department.
On August 29, 1953, Catherine was joined in Holy Matrimony to her husband of 68 years, Dr. David J. Smith, Sr.
In 1958, God touched their hearts to start Smith Memorial A. M. E. Church in the Mobile Terrace Community, which later moved to Hillsdale Heights. She served faithfully by Dr. Smith's side for over 50 years in their ministry.
Sister Catherine Coleman Smith worked with The Bessie C. Banks Missionary Society, was a Choir Member, served on the Stewardess Board, and worked with the Young People's Department... forever! Wherever she was needed in the church she worked. She held several offices in the Minister's Wives' organization. Additionally, she held offices in the Women's Missionary Society at the local and conference level.
She was known across the board for being straightforward and never sugarcoating anything! She would go the extra mile to help anyone. She never met a stranger she couldn't break!
Mrs. Catherine loved and was loved by all those she met.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Susanna Clark Coleman; brothers, Odell Coleman, Fletcher Coleman, Jr., and Frank Coleman; sisters, Virgina Randles, Doris Ridgeway, and Grace Bolden.
Sister Catherine C. Smith leaves behind her devoted husband of sixty-eight years, Dr. David J. Smith, Sr; son, Mr. David J. Smith, Jr.; devoted daughter-in-law, Loretta Smith; daughter, Mrs. Dorcas George; devoted son-in-law, Mr. Douglas George; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lois Watson, and Mrs. Sara Christian; grandchildren, Mrs. Angelique Maye (Tyson), Mrs. Gabriel Manzy (Eric), Mr. Joseph Jones of Montgomery, AL; and Mr. Kelvin Jones (Akala).
Then there are those who in her heart could do no wrong... great-grandchildren, Nyla Maye, Autumn Maye, Brooklyn Pettway, Eric Manzy, Jr., Kairo Jones, and Chris Jones all of Mobile, AL. Aunt Cat had a host of nieces and nephews that made her smile with flowers or a phone call, devoted: Wayne Edwards, Primus Ridgeway, Michael Bolden, Zierman Coleman, Kyna Coleman, Wiley Christian, and Mary Carlisle; a special friend, Ms. Kitty Jones; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends that will miss her dearly.
