Canadian Senator. Joyce Fairbairn gained recognition as the first female Canadian Senator. She began her career as a journalist, working in the Parliamentary Press Gallery, in Ottawa where she became an adviser to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Fairbairn was the first woman to be named as government leader in the Senate, when on June 29, 1984 she became Liberal Senator for Alberta. She retired from Senate January 18, 2013.
