Mr. Jesse W. Staley, age 88, of Millers Creek, and widower of Arvie Coffey Staley died this morning at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at Union Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Staley was born in Wilkes County, January 11, 1915, to B. Franklin and Mary Roberts Staley. As the 14th child in a family of 16, Mr. Staley was the last survivor of his family's generation. He was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence, Thornton, Richard, Fred, Bob, Howard, and Tam Staley and sisters, Sallie Rohrig, Belva Staley, Nettie Stewart, Dewie Parsons, Nelia Parsons, Ola Eller, Frances John Eckhart, and Winnie Staley. He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas Franklin Staley and a great grandson, Jonathan Bumgarner.

Mr. Staley served for many years as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent of Union Baptist Church. He was an avid reader, having read the Bible through numerous times. He valued commitment and worked his entire life to strengthen his community of which he was very proud.

Mr. Staley is survived by one daughter, Elaine (Virgil) Bumgarner of Millers Creek; two grandchildren, Patsy (Earl) Burgess of State Road and Dan (Lisa) Bumgarner of Millers Creek; six great grandchildren, Ross, Laura, and Beau Burgess, David, Jessica, and Emily Bumgarner.
