SAN ANGELO — C. A. "Doc" Counts, 98, of San Angelo passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in a local hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in the Robert Lee Cemetery. Services are under direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. C.A. was born in Coke County on the Divide on Aug. 17, 1908, to Alvin and Annie Counts. He was married to and divorced from Susie Lee Fisher, and they had two children. He was a real-life cowboy and rancher. Doc worked on the March Ranch for 26 years as foreman, until he went back to ranching for himself. He was known for being able to count large herds of livestock quickly and with great accuracy. He was a big man who was always overly fair, kind and would help anyone. He was preceded in death by a daughter, JoANN 'COUNTS' SCHKADE ; and brothers and sisters J.Q. Counts, Melba Posey, Lucille Cathey and James Counts. Survivors include his son, Milton Counts, and wife Kathy of Arlington; brothers Dennis Counts and wife Viola of San Angelo, Logan Counts and wife Billie Jean of Castlerock, Colo., Lloyd Counts and wife Shirley of Arlington; a sister, Ethel Harmon of Friendswood, Texas; four grandchildren, Randal Schkade of San Angelo, Rick Schkade and wife of Midland, Jeanice Freeman and husband Joe of Rifle, Colo., and Melody Counts and husband Carlton Anderson of Shady Shore, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Heston, Kristi and Heather Schkade of San Angelo, and Michael McLaurin of Tyler; and one very special companion, Mildred Burleson. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of San Angelo.
