Jessie Myrtle Hilton was born May 17, 1908 in the home built by her great uncle, Joel Westfall, which is still standing at the corner of what is now called East Westfall & Triangle Roads in Mariposa County California.
Because her mother did not approve of him, Jessie eloped with James Sylvester Hilton and they were married in Reno Nevada on August 26, 1929.
Jessie's parents were Charles Monroe & Ida May Kennedy Elliott. Jessie grew up at Elliott Corner and attended grammar school at the one room Chowchilla School about a quarter of a mile below her home off what is now called Highway 49 South.
Jessie graduated from Chowchilla Elemetary School on June 16, 1923 & from Mariposa County Highschool on June 10, 1926. After attending San Jose State Teachers College for three years, Jessie returned to Mariposa County and taught at the Chowchilla Elementary school where she had been a student. Because of his work as a plastering contractor, James & Jessie moved to Merced County California in 1951 but returned to Mariposa County after their retirement in 1963.
Jessie died January 4, 1985 in Mariposa County California and is buried beside her husband, James Hilton, and two of her great grandchildren, John William & Ashley Danielle Carpenter who were murdered in Merced County California on August 23, 2000.
