Iris Marie Gill, born to George Denson and Susan Lillie (Spence) Bowman on April 7, 1925, passed from death to eternal life on March 26, 2022 at the age of 96. Her faith secured in Jesus Christ whom she loved and proclaimed, she was a long time member of Mesa Baptist Church in Tylertown.
Marie was born in Tylertown and lived most of her life in Mississippi, so blessed to experience it alongside her husband of many years, Quincy "Q.D." Gill of Osyka, ten brothers and sisters, four children, and the broad tapestry of family that such a long, blessed life brings.
She was always up for a little adventure, and throughout the years she traveled widely. She rode the train to New Orleans, took a cruise to the Bahamas, and once drove to Canada just for lunch. Georgia was a favorite road trip with her daughters Nelda, Lenita, and Brenda to visit distant cousins there. They would often take long weekends to Alabama for shopping, and never passed a yard sale without stopping to look – even when they were on their way to a wedding in Wisconsin with a long drive ahead of them and nowhere to put even one more thing in the car! She was continuously on the lookout for a good deal but famously careful with her money – stretching, conserving, repairing rather than replacing. She appreciated what God had provided and took nothing for granted. We can each take a lesson from her in that regard, but let us also honor that when the opportunity came to help someone in need, she was the first to offer, and that in her stewardship, she would be the first to say that God blessed her with blessing others.
A true Southern woman, she was a fabulous cook and had that special something that made every dish a little more satisfying than you could ever do in your own kitchen, but she was famous for her hand-worked buttermilk biscuits. No one makes them like Grandma. Family dinners in her home were filled with laughter, great food, and children sitting on the floor with recycled aluminum pie pans for plates. We were just happy to be there with her. She received so many of us through the years with forgiveness and grace in equal measure as needed. She was ever ready with a compliment, but also advice as it was her prerogative as our matriarch to give. "You need to get those kids in church," she would say. God bless her for that. We are a living legacy to her love for the Lord and His great mercy towards all of His children.
She had a sense that God had put her here for a purpose, and she was happy to stay and serve until He called her home. She spent so much of her time caring for the needs of others – her beloved son, Quinton, along with elderly friends and family for whom she would faithfully cook and clean. Whenever it was time to part she would say the sweetest, "I love you," with a smile and a mischievous twinkle in her eye as she added, "Be sweet." She had an infectious and enduring spirit of gratitude and forgiveness that will be her lasting gift to all who have known and loved her – that we might strive to see the good and the possible in all things and never lose hope for the future. By the grace of God, may it ever be.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Gordon Stuckey, who so dutifully helped to look after her; Mary Rushing, her roommate and devoted companion at Diversicare of Tylertown long term care center; Eleanor "Glynn" Beard of Tylertown, her dear friend and cousin with whom she loved to rummage the local stores, and twelve grandchildren who adore her along with forty-eight great-grandchildren, and fifty-nine great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Quincy David "Q.D." Gill of Osyka, MS, four children, Nelda Hux Davis Stuckey (Gordon) of Magee, MS, Lenita Hux Brown (Elbert) of Columbia, MS, Quinton Jewel Hux of Tylertown, MS, Brenda Hux Neal Bryant (James) of Taylorsville, MS, their father, Wilbur Nello Hux of Bogalusa, LA, and two grandsons, Robert Lloyd Stuckey and Dewayne Allen Davis.
The family would like to especially thank her granddaughter, Rena Brown Boyd, and her niece, Lillie Hill Todora, both of whom have gone to great lengths to care for our sweet Grandma Marie and to help us all stay connected with her through the years with video phone calls, shared photos, and messages. We are in your debt.
Services will be officiated by Rev Shane Freeman at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Hartman Hughes Funeral Home in Tylertown. Friends may visit from 10:00 am until the time of service on Thursday. Interment services will follow at Tylertown Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Davis, Tony Neal, Eddie Smith, Brian Tolar, Taylor Bobb, and Barry Dillon. Honorary pallbearers will be Neil Brown, Mickey Neal, Mark Boyd, Lloyd Smith, Scott Chandler, and Richard Williams.
