On September 30, 1977, he was married to Natalie I. Day. He endearingly would call her "Sweetie". Their primary residence was located in Oxford Maine. Robert graduated from Falmouth High School then went on to Gorham State Teachers College. He served in the United States Army in 1952-1954 as a Corporal specializing in civil engineering. He was awarded an Army of Occupation Medal in Germany, and also received the National Defense Service Medal. Robert's introduction to woodworking began working alongside his father in the family furniture business "Merritt Roakes & Sons". Then he was a Foreman with Wilner Wood Products of South Paris, Maine until retirement. Upon retirement he enjoyed making wood products and furniture as he was the originator of "The Village Woodworker". At that time, he became an active member of the United Maine Craftsmen Guild for over 35 years and served on the board for over two terms. He actively participated as a member of the Oxford Hills Barbershop Quartet in South Paris Maine. He was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. He taught Sunday school at the Lutheran Church in South Paris Maine.
He was predeceased by his loving parents, Merritt and Lillian Roakes, his brother Ellis Roakes, and his sister Beverly Joyce, and his step-children, Matthew Holbrook and Andrew Holbrook. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Natalie. Also survived by his two sons from a previous marriage, Jonathan Roakes and David Roakes, and his step-children, David Holbrook, Stephen Holbrook, Daniel Holbrook, Deborah (Holbrook) Roy, Rebecca (Holbrook) McCain, Jonathan Holbrook, and Lois (Holbrook) Warren. He also leaves to cherish his memory in his 44 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will take place on April 10, 2022 at 3:00pm, casual attire accepted.
