My Great Grandpa Cecil was one of the kindest men I knew. Born the only son to Cecil Ray McKinley Sr and Mary Henrietta Winter, he was later followed by his "sissy", Nina Sue. It wasn't complete sunshine and rainbows for gramps growing up; his father was a drunk, which worsened after the death of little Nina, and his mother suffered constant abuse from his dad. After the death of his sissy, he was sent to be raised by two bachelors where he found his love for animals and farming.

Junior, as he was called, had found memories of hanging out with cousins, typical family shenanigans, and some very out of this world events, such as his grandmother driving a tractor into a ditch. As his only siblings died young, he spent much time with his cousins, aunts, and uncles. Well into his adult years he still visited his Aunt Hazel in San Francisco. Gramps took great pride in his Irish-Scots and German heritage, since his mother was a third generation citizen.

When he was young, a girl who fancied him named Peggy set him up on a date with her friend, Sharon Elaine Morrow. Despite Peggy's shenanigans, such as putting his keys down her shirt, he asked Sharon on a second date and she said "As long as Peggy isn't there". Cecil and Sharon would marry September 15 1957 in Adrian. Their marriage lasted 65 years, and spawned three children; Tony, Tim, and Margaret. He and Sharon settled on a farm and ranched in Ballard, Liberty, Adrian, Leeton, and near Hume where they would raise their children that would help with the farm. They would ranch with several different companies such as; R.B Rice, Crawford Farms, and Oppenheimer Company.

Gramps enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and golfing but oddly despite being right-handed, he played left. One of his greatest joys was his daughter, who he spoiled so much his own mother got onto him. But the greatest joy of all was his family, especially his grandchildren. My mother fondly remembers being on the farm, helping her grandmother with the chickens. Family was always a priority to him, his parents, children, wife, cousins, in-laws, he loved them all. Especially since his beloved wife was the eldest of nine.

He had to help his father sell the ranch and other land they owned, his father's spending and alcoholism got the best of him, and later he had to sell his own farm. After selling the farm, he moved across the street from his second son. This caused him to get visits from his granddaughter and her two children anytime they visited. He and Shar had a stroke scare, which finally caused them to stop smoking. But that wasn't the last of his health concerns.

When it came to getting old, there's two ways it can go; remain on the run and be mostly healthy, or stayed reclined to a chair. Gramps ended up taking the second option. This tragically caused him to have a hard time standing, this laying around also worsened his Alzheimer's. There were a few times where he was admitted into a nursing home, but the last time was permanent. He got visits from his children, wife, grandchildren and great-children. He was later admitted to the hospital due to his kidneys being in bad condition and was put on hospice. Despite this, he had hoped to be there for his eldest grandchild's graduation.

Hospice called my grandmother, telling her that the family needed to be by Cecil's side. Many couldn't come to see him, including me but my grandfather (his second son) was with him when he went to the farm in the sky. Where he is met by his parents, his baby sissy, several cousins, and several in-laws. I am so proud to be his great-grandson and have his middle name "Ray".

It's been a few months since Gramps passed, he would be turning 84 later this month. Thinking about when he first died, many of my friends asked "You don't seem that sad". And I have to say, yes, I wasn't really that sad. No tears, no nothing. Now it's mostly due to the most painful part was him declining in the nursing home. And when he finally passed, I was more relieved that he was no longer suffering. And that sentiment still lasts today, he's no longer in pain, he's with his mom and his little sissy. No more pain.

We love you, Gramps.
