Motion Picture and Television Director, Screenwriter, Producer. His father was an industrial salesman, John was raised in Missouri where he attended Kirkwood High School. An amateur filmmaker during his teenage years, he studied at Antioch College and got his start in the industry making animated television commercials which included the anti-smoking spot "Breaking the Habit" (1965). He made his feature directing debut with the low-budget "The Crazy Quilt" (1966) and followed this with "Funnyman" (1967), "Riverrun" (1970), the controversial TV film "Go Ask Alice" (1973), "Silence" (1974) and "Alex and the Gypsy" (1976). He may be best remembered for his directing of the critically-claimed TV-movie "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" (1974) which earned him an Emmy Award. He received an Academy Award for the documentary "Who Are the De Bolts?.....And Where Did They Get 19 Kids?" (1977). Other films are "Oliver's Story" (1978) and "Twice Upon a Time" (1983).
