Manuel J. Phillips, 75, of Murphy died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in an Asheville hospital. He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.

He had served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Infantry stationed in Hawaii. He completed a Military Justice Basic Course in January 1956.

Manuel retired from Coats America. He was a member of the
Little Glade Baptist Church.

He was the son of Virgil and Jose Orr Phillips and the husband of Gail Moses Phillips, who died February 23, 2007.

Interment was in the Old Martins Creek Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Murphy American Legion Post 96, Murphy DAV Chapter 73, Murphy VFW Post 10222, Hayesville American Legion Post 532, Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol), and NC National Guard.
