Charles Delmer "Chuck" Tate Jr.

Early Life: Charles "Chuck" was born on February 6, 1929, to Charles Delmer and Oreta Loraine Johnson Tate in Logan, Utah. He grew up with six sisters, three older, Donna, Glenna, Joyce, and three younger, Alice, Pauline, Carolyn; he also had a younger brother, Lynn, who only lived nine days. He enjoyed his childhood in Logan, working with his dad making potato chips, Tate O' Flakes, in the family store that was attached to their home. Chuck graduated from Logan High School in 1947.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands from 1949 to 1951. Celebrating Dutch Christmas has become a beloved Tate family tradition. He went on to graduate from Utah State University where he met his sweetheart, Dianne Coray. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 18, 1954, and went on to have seven children. Chuck received a bachelor's degree in 1954 and a master's degree in 1958 from Utah State University and a Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Chuck and Dianne then made their home in Orem, Utah.
❦ Chuck lived through the Great Depression and went from listening to the radio for world news, to a black and white TV, to color TV, to the Internet. He has traveled much of the world and served in many church callings. He and Dianne loved working in the temple, with his last years of temple service as a sealer. Chuck was the bishop of the Orem 13th Ward. And in 1983, he was called as the president of the Missouri St. Louis Mission. Later, he and Dianne served as missionaries in the St. Louis Missouri Temple.
❦ Chuck taught English, Dutch Literature, and Religion at Brigham Young University, spanning 34 years, including a year at BYU-Hawaii. He was the editor of BYU Studies from 1967 to 1983. Additionally, he edited many publications through the Religious Studies Center at BYU. Chuck and Dianne spent four winters in Nauvoo, teaching for BYU. He also ran the ski school at Sundance, giving his children the opportunity to ski.
❦ Charles Delmer "Chuck" Tate Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Orem, Utah, surrounded by family on Sunday, March 6, 2022. He was 93.
Survived By: His loving wife of 67 years, Dianne; six children: Liz (Rob) Krewson, Becky (Joe) Ahlberg, Coray (Krista) Tate, Janet (Kent) Stevens, Amy (Tyler) Daniels, and Kim (Kiley) Brannon; one sister, Pauline; 24 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
Preceded In Death By: His daughter, Stephanie; his granddaughter, Briana; his parents and six of his siblings.
