VIETNAMGREG JACOBS, age 73, of Winchester, Wisconsin passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at his home. Surrounded with loved ones. He was born on August 28, 1947 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating high school, Greg entered the United States Marine Corps. He did three tours in Vietnam from 1966-1968. He trained as a field radio operator/communication specialist. He received two purple hearts and a bronze star w/V Device. Following his tours in Vietnam, Greg's last year in the service was spent touring Europe on a military ship. He job was a Military Police and to escort officers when on land. When he wasn't driving around the countryside he participated in War Games with other countries. While in Greece, Greg was in the beach landing scenes during the filming of the movie Patton. It was at this time that he got the opportunity to "rub elbows" with George C. Scott. Greg was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp in 1969. At this time he married Janis Lentz on July 11, 1970 who celebrated 50 years of marriage together this last summer. They had a son, John Jacobs. From 1970-1988 Greg worked in various sales and management positions in the Milwaukee area. From 1988-98 Greg worked for the State of Wisconsin Job Service in Milwaukee as a disabled veteran outreach program specialist where he provided employment assistance and counseling to veterans, placing special emphasis and preference to disabled and other targeted veterans. From 1998-2010, he again worked for the State of Wisconsin as a vocational rehabilitation program coordinator, where he continued counseling veterans. He personally developed a follow-up and tracking system covering the full state demographic area with a staff of 80+ people including V A Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists and Counseling Psychologists. In 1991, Greg, along with volunteers from various Veteran organizations, attended an event twice a year targeting at-risk and homeless veterans called Stand Down. After the Stand Down events were moved to the Richards Street Armory in Milwaukee he served as president of the board until 2011. Stand Down's mission is to provide a "hand-up NOT A hand-out" for at risk and homeless veterans. Stand Down focuses on providing services such as medical, dental, optical, haircuts, job service, help with housing and various hook ups to connect with counseling to various issues pertaining to veterans. They are provided with breakfast and lunch, clothing, eyeglasses, as well as a Milwaukee County Judge who volunteers his time to grant clemency on misdemeanors, parking tickets, and other various legal issues. He was very proud of the fact that these events were all volunteer-based and no one received any compensation for their time. To this day Stand Downs continue every February and September. Greg earned many honors while while serving in the Marine Corp including, Marine Corp Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 4 Battle stars, the Presidential Unit Ribbon, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Medal with Palm Leaf, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Star and the Vietnamese Presidential Unit Medal. Most notably, he earned his Purple Heart Medal with 1 star and a Bronze Star Medal with V Device. Greg was an active life member of DAV Chapter 44 where he held positions as Commander, Senior and Junior Vice Commander, Legislative Officer, First District Commander, Department Senior Vice Commander and Junior Vice Commander. He was on the Board of Directors of the War Memorial in Milwaukee and a delegate of the Milwaukee County Allied Veterans Council. Greg was also an active member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 96 where he held positions as Commander, Senior Vice Commander and other various offices. He was an active life member of the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1, where he served as commander and other offices. Chapter 1 held various local and statewide activities including parades and public speaking to various schools and community groups which he participated in, along with calling cadence at the parades. He was an active member of AMVETS Post 60 and the Marine Corp League, Badger Detachment. Greg served on the Board of Directors for FEMA in Milwaukee County. This group were overseers of the shelter and food pantry programs in Milwaukee County. He was also a volunteer counselor at Wisconsin Nazarene Compassionate Care Center where he developed a program to house homeless veterans in need of drug and alcohol program assistance. Greg was voted in as the 2005 Veteran of the Year for Milwaukee County. He was awarded the Thomas Litherland Award recognizing his service to veterans. He also received the Patrick Henry Award which is awarded to an individual who has distinguished himself over an extended period of time in the support of the Armed Forces of the United States. Greg was selected as the IAPES DEVOP of the Year for his achievement in service to veterans based on participation in professional, community, church and veterans organizations activities that demonstrated outstanding performance beyond the normal expectations of job requirements. He also received the DAV National Commanders Award. In his free time, Greg spent over 30 years approximately two weekends a month displaying, selling and sharing his vast knowledge and gun collection at gun shows throughout Southern Wisconsin. He was always accompanied with his faithful companion dog, Sukie known to all at the shows and had his own gun and holster that he wore. Sukie was written up in the state journal and known to all as the gun show dog. Fishing and camping was how Greg would decompress. Rascal (blue and gold macaw) and Suskie again always accompanied the family on these outings. No one was ever left behind. Greg's dedication and unmatched service to the veterans that he worked with did not go unnoticed by his peers and coworkers. He was highly respected for his passion that made a difference in the lives of the veterans he has worked with throughout the years. A memorial service honoring Greg's life was held on November 10, 2021(Marine Corp Birthday) at 11:00 AM at Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King. Lewin Funeral Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin assisted the family.
