Thomas G. "Tiger" Atkinson Jr., 70, lifelong resident of Green Bay, died Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Tiger was born March 31, 1951, in Green Bay to the late Thomas and Patricia Atkinson.

Tiger graduated from Green Bay West High School, Class of 1969, and attended UW-La Crosse. He left there, returning home to marry his high school sweetheart, Mary S. (Van Beek) Atkinson and started a family of their own having two children, Carol Ann and Tommy. In their younger days, they ran the Van Beek family grocery store for a few years before he joined the Green Bay Fire Department in 1978. This was to become his second family, as he stayed with the GBFD for 35 years. He worked up through the normal ranks of Private, Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, and finally retiring as a Battalion Chief in 2013. He spent his time at a few stations over his years on the Department, but it was Station 2 and the guys on 2C, where he settled in. It was here he spent years riding Rescue 2, or in his words, the "Gut Bucket", a term we heard endlessly at home. He simply loved and enjoyed being a Paramedic, and Rescue 2 was the busiest in town at that time. He could've transferred off that rig many times, but never would. He missed the floor, but also enjoyed his last seven years as a "white shirt" Battalion at Station 1, as he had deep respect for those he worked with each day.

For enjoyment, Tiger spent as much time as he could on the water with Mary and the kids. He looked forward to the annual deer hunting trip in Boulder Junction every year, which was a family tradition since 1964. He got to enjoy his last trip to the casino and his last sizzling steak off the platter at Blink Bonnie's in St. Germain this past November. Tiger loved his kids and grandchildren more than anything. As anybody who knew him well, if you stopped in to say hi or play cribbage, most likely somebody else was there too.

Tiger is survived by his children and their spouses: Carol Ann and Chad O'Leary, Suamico; Thomas III and Tanya Atkinson, Suamico; grandchildren: Marissa (special friend, Hunter Hoffmann) and Makenzie O'Leary; Henry and Heather Atkinson; brothers, Patrick and William (Roberta) Atkinson; sisters, Robin (John) Cavil and Anne Atkinson; sister-in-law, Ann Atkinson; brothers-in-law, Larry (Dianne) Van Beek and James Van Beek; sister-in-law, Muriel Van Beek; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, Thomas and Patricia Atkinson; a brother, Michael Atkinson; a sister-in-law, Carol Ebel; a brother-in-law, Thomas Van Beek.

Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 7. Friends may also call at Annunciation Catholic Church, 401 Gray St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8; followed by the Mass of Resurrection at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Fort Howard Memorial Park.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Carol Ann and Tom wish to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Badine and Kayla Guns, APNP at Green Bay Oncology. Their delivery and consistency made our dad feel more comfortable during his treatment.
