Michael Atkinson Obituary

Atkinson, Michael Robert

Michael Robert Atkinson, 56, Green Bay, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2015, after a nearly four year, courageous battle with a brain tumor. He was born on October 12, 1958, in Green Bay to Thomas and Patricia (Liebergen) Atkinson.

Mike graduated from West High School, Class of 1978. On September 21, 1985 he married Ann Melendy at Annunciation Catholic Church, Green Bay.

He was a member of St. Agnes Parish where he volunteered at both the church and the school. Mike was also a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, White Tails Unlimited and a past President of the Muskellunge Lake Association. He also enjoyed 12 years of playing co-ed softball for the City of Green Bay.

Mike will be remembered as having a larger than life presence and a great sense of humor. He enjoyed being at his cottage in Tomahawk and the many campfires and cookouts with all the neighbors. He was an avid hunter and truly enjoyed duck hunting with his son and dog Britta, along with deer hunting in Boulder Junction with all his hunting buddies. Fishing, swimming, water skiing, tubing, 4-wheeling, ice fishing, downhill skiing, taking road trips, camping and woodworking were many of his joys in life.

He loved his tractors, music, his dogs and spending time at the lake in Suamico. He proudly finished digging the lake after his Dad passed away and stocked the lake with fish hoping to one day be able to catch some nice size perch. He also greatly enjoyed boating on the Bay of Green Bay on the family boat, "The Mercury"and with his 28' Chris Craft. Mike was a man of his word and his handshake was his contract. He was very patriotic and loved his country. Most of all, Mike treasured the time he spent with his wife and son Mack and being with his family and friends.

Mike is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Michael Jr. "Mack" who was his pride and joy; his brother, Thomas "Tiger" Atkinson, Jr.; his mother-in-law and her husband, Laurelyn and Bob Heier; father-in-law and his wife, James and Sue Melendy; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Debra and Myles Lambert and Lisa and Sean Mahoney. He is further survived by his nieces and nephews, Myles Lambert, Jr., Rachel Lambert, Cailin Mahoney, Aiden Mahoney, Thomas Atkinson III, and Carol Ann O'Leary and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Mary Atkinson.

Friends may call at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth Street from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Patrick C. Beno officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Fort Howard Memorial Park. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family. To send online condolences please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.

A memorial fund has been established in Mike's name.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many, many people who offered their help, support, prayers and care of not only Mike but also his family. They would also like to thank the staff of Unity Hospice, especially Traci, Melissa, Cindy and Sarah for their compassion during this difficult time.

Ann and Mack would like to acknowledge Ann's sister, Debbie, who came from Houston to help care for Mike for several months during Mike's illness and to Debbie our neighbor who was always there for us from day one.

Mike (Dad) when you passed a part of us left with you. The memories of you will be in our hearts forever.
