Gary Dale Cash of Grangeville, a former sports reporter, and mill worker died of cancer Monday at his home. He was 56.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1936, in Grangeville to Walter Cash and Nora (Shearer) Cash.

He attended the Tolo Lake School west of Grangeville through the eighth grade and graduated from Grangeville High School in 1955. He then attended the University of Idaho in Moscow.

He later returned to Grangeville and began working for the Triangle Lumber Company.

He married Jean Holes on Dec. 12, 1959, in Grangeville. After their marriage, they both attended Kinman Business School in Spokane.

They returned to Grangeville and in 1960 he started working for the Idaho County Free Press and Wicks Forest Products (Ida-Pine) as safety and personnel director.

He worked at the newspaper until semi-retiring in 1978. he continued to write sports for the paper until 1990.

He retired from the Ida Pine Mill in 1992 for health reasons.

He was a member of and past president of the Grangeville Lions Club and the Grangeville Gun Club; a member of the Grangeville Elks Lodge No. 1825, and a member of the Grangeville Golf and Country club.

He served for many years on the Grangeville Border Days Committee, and for the past 30 years, he had taken an active part in street sports during the Border Days celebration. He was also a charter member of the Grangeville High School Bulldogs Boosters.

He umpired high school baseball for many years, was a referee for youth and city basketball programs, and manned the yardage markers at GHS football games.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Two brothers, Howard and Morris, and a sister, Elbra, died previously.
