FUNERAL OF THE LATE JOHN BURT
_______
Resident of Lopez Island for Twenty-Seven Years
___________
The funeral services for John H. Burt, who suddenly passed away on Monday, November 13, 1933, was a shock to everyone, although he had been troubled with his heart for some time, he was in apparent good health up to the last. He was working on the roof and was found there after his death.
Mr. Burt had a wide acquaintance on the Island and surrounding territory, as he had resided on Lopez Island for over 27 years. He was born in Pennsylvania, October 26, 1858, and was married in Armstrong, Iowa [married Sarah Jane Baker]. Of this union seven children were born: Mrs. Ruth Williams and Mrs. Esther Watts, of Armstrong, Iowa; Mrs. Hazel Hammond and Mrs. Dorothy Lee of Port Stanley; Mrs. Lillian McKay of Mount Vernon, Washington; and Ray and Harry Burt of Port Stanley. He also leaves three brothers and three sisters: Mr. Peter Burt of Rabey, Minnesota; Andrew Burt, Armstrong, Iowa; and Joseph Burt of Port Stanley; Mrs. Helen Cousins and Mrs. Mary Davis of Bellingham; and Mrs. Isobel [Isabella] Bloor of Port Stanley. There are also 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His wife passed away in 1904 and shortly after her passing Mr. Burt and family moved to Lopez Island where he lived until the time of his death.
Two beautiful selections were rendered at the services. "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" was sung by Mrs. J. Ender and Mrs. Thomas Bell. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung by Miss Jennie Brannum. The music was furnished by Mr. F. L. Presher.
The pallbearers were: Messrs. Joe Ender, Lou Bolton, John Wilson, Neils Neilson, William Cousins and Charles Buchanan.
The funeral services were under the direction of Allen & Presher, funeral directors of Lopez Island.
