His paternal grandparents were Capt. Miles Ellison (1799-1884) and Deborah Greenlee Johnson (1796-1869). His maternal grandparents were Thomas Cox (1798-1860) and Mary "Polly" Ellison (1800- ).
Matthew married Effie Blanche Lauderdale, d/o James S. Lauderdale and Elizabeth Henson. They had four children:
1. Bertha May Ellison (1887-1982) married 1) Dexter J. Hill, and 2) Robert Kates Cook.
2. Willie Martin Ellison (1889-c1960).
2. Ruby Blanche Ellison (1892-1980) married James Gaither Satterwhite.
4. Nettie Lee Ellison (1895-1979) married John G. Heard. Her Find a Grave # 50520310 in Gregg County, Texas.
Family Story per Ernestine Cook Becke and Lisa Cook Moore:
Effie died 18 days after giving birth to Nettie, so Bertha had to assume responsibility for the other children. One day Mathew told the children that he was going to town, and when he returned he would be bringing a new momma to them. He went to town and married Minnie, a girl he had seen only once riding in a buggie with her father, Richard Jasper Worthen.
Minnie was said to have been a good mother to the 4 children; she and Matthew went on to have many more children together. Matthew worked at the livery stable, then drove the mail hack from Jacksboro to Weathorford, TX.
