John was born on September 3, 1927 in Morrison, the son of Leon W. and Mabel (Hensel) Reed. He graduated from Morrison High School, class of 1945. John was a United States Navy Veteran and served in WWII from 1945-1946. He married Beverly Floyd on November 8, 1968 in Rock Falls. John graduated from Bradley University in Peoria in 1978 with a Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement. He worked for the State of Illinois, beginning as a patrol officer and retiring as a Master Sergeant. John was a member of the Morrison American Legion, Post #328, for over 70 years and also a member of First Congregational Church in Rock Falls. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking, traveling, spending time with his family, and drinking coffee with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven Reed; two sisters, Mary Ann and Lila; and one brother, Bill.
A family graveside service with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling with his grandson, Reverend Seth Bush officiating.
