James Rodriques, 87, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

Born July 25, 1926, in Palmerton, Pa., he enlisted in the Navy in February 1944 at Allentown, Pa. He completed Boot Camp at Samgon, N.Y., after six weeks, on April 17, 1944, and shipped out for England on the RMS Queen Mary. He reported to the LST 388 on April 29, 1944, and made The Normandy Invasion. He returned to the United States on Jan. 10, 1945 on LCI 35 and was discharged on April 12, 1946, in Bainbridge, Md.

James then went to work as a steel worker before he enlisted into the National Guard in Lehighton, Pa. He then enlisted back into the Navy on Nov. 12, 1950, and boxed for the Navy as a Feather Weight at Green Cove Spring, Fla. from May 1, 1951, until May 5, 1957, and won the Golden Glove.

James then transferred to the USS Robinson DD-562, and on April 2, 1958, transferred to NADC, Johnsville, Pa., as Head Master at Arms at NAS Willow Grove, where astronauts went through training to go to the moon. On May 14, 1958, he married Cidney Heisler and then transferred on June 28, 1960, to USS Murray DD-576. On July 8, 1960 he transferred to the USS Beale DD-471 serving during the Bay of Pigs invasion and Vietnam. On March 31, 1967, he was assigned to the USS Eaton DD-510 to go back to Vietnam. Then, on Jan. 16, 1969, he transferred to Naval Air Station Norfolk for shore duty, and on Apr. 24, 1970, to the USS Hermitage LSD-34. On Apr. 2, 1973, he was discharged from the Navy, an on April 4, 1973, he worked for the Newport News Shipyard until Nov. 20, 1973, when he transferred to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.

James served as a Boy Scout Leader for Pack 184 and was a member and usher at the Chapel of The Centurion at Fort Monroe. He also served as Commander of V.F.W. Post 3160 and was a VFW District Commander, was a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, a Scottish Rite Mirror and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 99, a member of American Legion Post 327, D.A.V. #20, and Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60. He was also involved with Coalition for Good Government, politics and different school activities. He also served as a representative for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Left to cherish James's memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Cidney; his four sons, Jessie Rodriques and wife Deb, Juan Rodriques, James Rodriques, Jr., and Joel Rodriques; his three grandchildren, Jessica and her son Jacob Joy, Lucas and Juan Jr.; his 12 brother and sisters, Joe Rodriques and wife Silvia, Trinne Northstein, Steve Rodriques and wife Paula, Jesus Lorash, Linda and Walt Johnson, Pat Rodriques and Rudy and wife Kathy. He also has quite a few nephews and nieces, including one very close nephew, Rick Rodriques and his wife Carrie, of Chesapeake.

The funeral was held in the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Chapel on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk on May 30.
