Bully, the son of "Mama Mae" and "Daddy Houston," was actually born in the Elk Mill Village, where many of his relatives lived over the years. The family is living there (listed as "Factory Town") in the 1930 census, when Bully was just over two. They are only a couple houses away from his uncle, "Papa Joe" Mills; his aunt, Allie Mills Spurlock; and his grandparents, Pap and Ma Mills. Among others.

He received his nickname of Bully from his Uncle Granville Edward "Pet" Mills, who considered him one. That may be apocryphal, but he DID get his first name from Pet and may have gotten his middle name from Houston's uncle, Abner Boone Sullivan.
