Charles Brakebill enlisted as a private at Marysville, California, September 6, 1861, and was mustered into Company D, 1st California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco September 9. Private Brakebill accompanied the California Column on its long march across the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts to drive the Confederates out of New Mexico Territory. He arrived at Tucson in May 1862 and continued on to Mesilla where he arrived in July. Private Brakebill re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer at Santa Fe October 5, 1863, and was transferred to Company B, same regiment, where he was promoted to corporal. Corporal Charles Brakebill was mustered out at Santa Fe August 8, 1866 (Orton, pp. 99, 119). He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Silver City, New Mexico Territory, July 1, 1892, and received application No. 1,119,499 and certificate No. 1,047,571.

Annie was born in Louisiana in January 1865 and was the mother of one surviving child, Fannie Moon (born Arkansas, February 1883). Charles and his family were still living at Silver City in 1900, at which time Charles was a baker and candy maker. (1900 Census)
