Rosanna Elizabeth Cato Travis Cloud
May 3, 1812 - April 12, 1848

Rosanna Elizabeth Cato was born to William Henry and Sarah Sally Massey Cato. She was the youngest daughter of eleven children. Rose married her school teacher, William Barret Travis, on August 6. 1828. Their son, Richard Edward Travis was born in 1829, and two years later Rose was expecting a second child. The family was torn apart when William Barrett suddenly abandoned his family over unspecified problems he left behind unresolved or forgiven. There are differing speculations why Travis would suddenly leave Rose (great with child) and his young son behind. They were left to fend for themselves while Travis would move on to Texas. Rose gave birth to their daughter, Susan Isabella alone in 1831. Travis was charged with deserting his family and the marriage ended in divorce in 1835. Rose married Samuel Grardin Cloud on February 14, 1836, just weeks before the fall of the Alamo (and William's death) on March 6. As for their children, Rose had given permission for Richard to live with David Ayers and family in Texas. Susan was married in Alabama but lived in Texas. Rose and Samuel Cloud relocated to Louisiana living in New Orleans. She fell victim to Yellow Fever and died on April 11, 1858, at thirty-five years of age. A burial record for Rose in New Orleans doesn't seem to exist. Burials were difficult and mostly above ground or cremation due to a high water table. Until such information is found, it's assumed Rosanna Elizabeth Travis Cloud was cremated. Perhaps, it's just a coincidence, but daughter, Susan, possibly also a victim of Yellow Fever, died at thirty-six years of age, having lived only one year longer than her mother. The William Barret Travis family had its share of tragedy, but, their sacrifices and legacy are enshrined in the State of Texas and American history never to be forgotten.
