He enlisted in the War Between The States in the Confederate States Army at the age of 17 in Opelika, Alabama, along with his brother, Jasper Newton Buckner, on March 19, 1862 with Co. B, 45th Alabama Inf. Regiment. He was captured at the Battle of Atlanta by forces under William T. Sherman on July 22, 1864. As a POW, he was sent to Military Prison Camp at Louisville, Ky. on July 30 before going to Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois on July 31. After the War he was discharged from Camp Douglas on June 17, 1865. Upon his return home he married Nancy McCoy on April 3, 1866 and together had three children, James Henry Preston Buckner, Adaline E. Buckner and Walter David Buckner. He died in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama on Feb. 1, 1909.
