He married Frances on November 2, 1837 in Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia and was the Father of Emily J., Adaline F., Jasper Newton, James Henry, William T., Ann A., Joel C., Miss Susan, Mary E Buckner and Mary " Mollie " Steed ( granddaughter ). He was a Veteran of the War of 1812 and the Seminole Indian War of 1836. He was called the " General " by many of his friends.
