WILLIAM FRED PRIEFERT, a retired farmer residing in the village of Nelson, Buffalo county, was born in Bressen Hust, Brandenberg, Germany, August 8, 1854. His parents, Frederick and Augusta (Meisner) Priefert, emigrated to the United States in 1858, accompanied by their two children, Amelia and William Fred. After forty days on the ocean they landed and proceeded west to Pittsburgh, whence they came to Buffalo City, this county, to join the colony that was then making a settlement here. Soon, however, they took up their residence in Waumandee township, and from there moved to Beef River, about three miles from Alma, where the parents made their permanent home. The tract on which they settled was provided with a log barn and Mr. Priefert put up a log house. Like the other pioneers, he used an ox team for his early farm work. He was a member of the Reformed church and was one of the town officials, serving on the side board. His death occurred about 1865. In addition to the two children, Amelia and William F., already mentioned, he and his wife had a daughter born to them in this county, Caroline, who is now Mrs. Paul Schroeder of Alma township.

After her husband's death Mrs. Augusta (Meisner) Priefert married Theodore Albert Sauer, and went to live northeast of Alma, up Beef river. William Fred Priefert was 11 years old when his father died, and after his mother's second marriage he accompanied her and his step-father, Mr. Sauer, to their farm up Beef river. At the age of 13 he began working out for the farmers and also spent eight seasons on the river.

William Feed Priefert was married, in 1879, to Augusta Brunkow, who was born in Germany, daughter of Michael Fred and Dorothy Brunkow, and who came to this country with her parents.

After many years of happy married life, she died May 18, 1917.

Then, having attained his majority, he bought a farm in Nelson township, two and a half miles from Nelson. It contained 160 acres, of which forty acres were improved, and it was, furthermore, provided with a log house and barn. On that place he spent his active career as a farmer and made numerous improvements on it. Buying 120 acres more land, he found himself in possession of a farm of 280 acres, and in times he replaced the original log buildings with a fine frame house of seven rooms, a good barn, 26 by 60 feet in size, a silo 12 by 35 feet, and other fine buildings. As a stock farmer he raised Shorthorn cattle, Percheron horses and Poland-China hogs. He also became a shareholder in the telephone company and the Nelson creamery. After a successful career of nearly forty years he retired, and moving to Nelson village, erected a fine brick house of eight rooms and two halls, which is his present residence.
