Lieutenant John Leask, 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry. Son of John Leask & Christina Leask (nee Cobban). Married Louisa Burrows in 1893. He served for 5 years with the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. He had emigrated to Maryborough (Queensland) in 1888 and later moved to Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. Educated at Spring Creek (Clifton) State School & Leichhardt Street Boys State School, Queensland. A farmer and commission agent before enlistment. On 21st July 1900, a detachment of 300 Bushmen (from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland) were sent to clear the road between Magato Pass and Eland's River, but were caught in a Boer ambush at Koster River. Lieutenant Leask was wounded in the action to the West of Pretoria. He died a month later of his wounds & pneumonia in a military hospital in Pretoria aged 35 years. He was buried on 21 Aug 1900. He uis also commemorated on the Brisbane Boer War memorial in Anzac Square, Ann Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (see: https://vwma.org.au/explore/memorials/2756).

In the action 16 year old Bugler Forbes, from Queensland earnt a Distinguished Conduct Medal for retrieving ammunition pouches from dead horses in an exposed position. Western Australian Dr Ingoldby had his hand badly injured when he went out under fire to tend to Trooper Scott, who was shot in the groin by an explosive bullet. Local girl 18 year old Emily Back (of British descent), had offered to ride for help for those wounded at Koster River, but when this was not needed she tended the men, in the thick of the action. She also went back the next day. The New South Wales Bushmen thanked her with a purse of 16 sovereigns sent via Major Thomas, and EJ Tannock was given the task of sending an engraved watch from the 3rd Queensland Contingent. The 6 Australians killed at Koster River are buried in the Rustenburg Cemetery. A further 22 were wounded.
