Elias James was born circa 1775 in the Welsh Tract of the Wilmington Disctrict of North Carolina. He was the son of Enoch James (born 1739) of Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and, the grandson of Thomas James (cicrca 1690-1753) of Radnor Township, Chester County Pennaylvania and Mary (nee "Jones") James (1716-1745). Elias' father Enoch was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and on or about 1797 the two relocated to Wilkes County, Georgia. DNA evidence obtained in 2010 through the James Y-DNA Surname Project hosted by Family Tree confirmed that Elias was the son of Enoch. Elias was reported to have seven or eight daughters and three sons. Through Y-DNA testing of his descendants, it was confirmed that Isaac James (1797-1880) and Thomas James (circa 1804-1851) were two of his sons. In 1803 Elias reportedly participated in the Georgia Land Lottery. Between 1823 and 1850, Elias' children are found within 30 miles of Wilkes County, Georgia with Isaac residing in neighboring Elbert County, 23 miles to the north, and Thomas residing in neighboring Warren County, 30 miles to the south. On or about 1835, Elias and his son Thomas migrated to Alabama after obtaining a land grant for 40 acres in Franklin County. On or about 1858, Elias' son Isaac migrated with much of his family from Elbert County, Georgia to Newton County, Mississippi. Elias died circa 1840 in Franklin County, Alabama. The precise location of his burial is unknown.
