Enoch James was born in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1739 to Thomas James (circa 1690-1753) and Mary (nee "Jones") James (1716-1745). The oldest of five children born to Thomas and three children born to May, Enoch lost his mother in 1745 and his father in 1753 at the age of 14 years. Enoch personally appeared before the Orphan Court in Philadelphia and prayed that Isaac Rees of Upper Merion Township, Yeoman, might be appointed his guardian until he reached adulthood. On April 29, 1762, Enoch married Rachel Richards. In his early years Enoch was identified as a chair maker by trade and known to have resided in Chester County, Pennsylvania through 1772 in the townships of Tredyffrin and Marple. Thereafter it is believed he migrated south to the Welsh Tract within the Wilmington District of North Carolina. During the Revolutionary War Enoch is known to have served as a junior officer (Ensign) in a South Carolina Militia and fought against the British in the southern campaigns. Around 1797, following the Revolutionary War, Enoch is believed to have migrated south from the Wilmington District to Wilkes County, Georgia where is likely to have died. Enoch is known to have had at least one son, Elias James born circa 1775 who died in Franklin County Alabama circa 1840.
