Thomas James was the first born son of David James (c1660-1739) and Margaret Jane (nee Mortimer) James of Llandegley and Glascwm parishes in Radnorshire, Wales following their arrival in the Welsh Tract of Pennsylvania with William Penn on October 28, 1682. Thomas was born in the family's log cabin on the original 100 acres of land settled by David and Margaret in Radnor Township, PA. Thomas was baptized in 1733 at the Great Valley Baptist Church in Devon, PA. His first marriage occurred in 1738 to Mary Jones (1716-1745), the daughter of Griffith and Catherine John of Tredyffrin, Pennsylvania. His second marriage occurred in 1749 to Sarah Henderson (1720-1800), the daughter of Alexander Henderson (1696-1771) and his wife Jane (-1775). Thomas was given lands by his father David and step-mother Jane in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County in the vicinity of Mount Joy where he died intestate in January of 1753. The custody of his surviving children was determined by the Philadelphia Orphan Court. His three eldest children: Enoch, Leah and Elias were all placed under the care of separate guardians. His two youngest sons: Danial and Jonathan remained in the custody of their mother Sarah (nee Henderson) James who later remarried Andrew Crawford and more children. Three of Thomas' sons: Enoch, Elias and Daniel were all veterans of the Revolutionary War.
