John Charles Upton unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the age of 66 years.

He was born on May 16, 1955 to Ernest Elwood and Jean (Bolatto) Upton. John married the love of his life, Lori Ann Monroe, on November 21, 1981 and shortly thereafter they moved to Houston to start their family and careers. John joined the Houston Police Department on December 27, 1982 as a member of Class 110 and retired on April 26, 2013.

Throughout his long career, John was known and loved for his humor, his dedication, and support to his family and his fellow officers. John served many years as a Field Training Officer and loved teaching the new rookies how to be an Officer. He was always there for his brothers and sisters in blue.

John had an impact on so many people's lives. He was a second dad to many, a mentor to others, the neighborhood husband. From helping the neighbor kids fix their bikes, to taking a fatherless child to the Father-Daughter Dance at school, or volunteering to chaperone a class trip to the zoo, John loved to serve, protect, and mentor people.

John loved life and never met a stranger. On family trips, Lori and the kids would have to drag him out of some random gas station along the way because he was making new friends. He had a way of making everyone he met feel as though they were the most important person in the world. It didn't matter if you were a store clerk or an elected official, John talked to your heart. He was always there with a joke or a story to brighten your day. John was a good man who will be greatly missed by so many.

He is survived by his loving wife: Lori Upton; daughter: Katie Upton of Kyle, Texas; son: Jeff (Monica) Upton of Spring, Texas; his mother: Jean (Bolatto) Upton of Marseilles, Illinois; sisters: Kathy (Nick) Strickland of Keyingham, England and Elain Upton of Marseilles, Illinois; his beloved dogs: Molly and Maggie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Elwood Upton.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel, Grand Parkway in Katy, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at Schmidt Funeral Home Grand Parkway Chapel in Katy with HPD Chaplain Vincent Johnson officiating.
