Robert Edward Zimmerman, a longtime resident of Bay View Washington, passed away peacefully at his home January 7th, 2022 surrounded by family.

Robert, (Bob) to all who knew him was a devout Catholic and attended services at St. Charles in Burlington and was very involved in the church activities.

Bob was born in Buffalo, NY, to Meyer and Marie Zimmerman and had 4 siblings, Douglas, Carole, Jerry and Janet.

He served in the US Army and after his honorable discharge, left for South America to work in the oil industry but was offered work with Shell Chemical Company in Houston, Texas, where he started his career.

There is where he met his first wife and the mother of his children, Lydia Wilson.

They were married shortly after in Texas where they started their family where the first of 8 children, Michael, Patricia, Mary and Bobby where born.

Years later Bob was offered a job transfer to the Northwest. He was very hesitant to move his wife and family away from her family and friends in Houston. Getting up the nerve, he did ask Lydia. Her reply was, "Let's go!"

They moved to Bay View Washington where his job and his family grew and Vincent, Greg, Terry and Steve were born.

In May of 1971, Lydia passed suddenly.

The challenge of being widowed with 7 children was unimaginable, however Bob was always there.

Some years passed when he met Agnes Vottero, who also was widowed. After a year and a half courtship, Bob and Agnes, (Aggie) were married.

Bob worked at the Anacortes Shell refinery the remainder of his career, retiring in 1984.

After retirement, he volunteered with Hospice and other charities and organizations, giving back to the community he loved.

He and Aggie spent many wonderful years traveling and enjoying their lives together. Bob also continued to attend services and be active in the church.

They also enjoyed many years with their children, 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

On March 7, 2019, Aggie passed after a long illness.

Bob was an avid reader interested in all things of history. He would read in his living room facing the bay and this was one of his favorite places in the world to be.

His sense of humor was witty and unmatched. His alertness was sharp, never losing his ability to engage in any topic of the moment. The passing of time was his friend.

He enjoyed life and lived each day as a humble and dignified follower of Christ and was never too far away for the ones who loved him. A constant example of what a man should be and how one should treat the gift of life. He did so in such a magnificent manner in giving to others and honoring his creator. Bob most loved his family and was always the father who was looked up to for guidance.

Bob was preceded in death by his first wife Lydia, his second wife Aggie, his two sons, Robert Jr. and Vincent.

Services honoring his life will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington on January 17 at 12:00 p.m.

A Graveside Service will be held at the Bay View Cemetery, Bay View directly after Funeral Mass with a reception following Graveside Service at the Bay View Civic Hall, 12615 C St., Mt Vernon WA. 98273. (Located in Bay View)
