Marie Hamm Ankeny 11/5/1903 - 12/7/2004. Preceded in death by her parents, William Hamm, Sr. and Marie Scheffer Hamm; siblings, William Hamm, Jr., Margaret Hamm Kelley; beloved identical twin, Theodora "Pinkie" Lang, and her husband, DeWalt H. "Pick" Ankeny. Survived by her children, Kendall Mix, Sally Anson (Peter), DeWalt H. Jr. "Pete" (Margaret), Michael H. (Nuch); 17 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. She was very devoted and supportive of her family, friends and community.

As founding members of the Hamm Foundation, she and her siblings and their spouses and Frank Rarig founded and continued to support the Hamm Memorial Psychiatric Clinic and Radio Talking Book at the Communication Center for The Blind. In 1954 they established the Institute of Mental Health at St. John's University at Collegeville which brought together clergy and eminent psychiatrists to develop an understanding attitude toward mental illness in pastoral work. She served on the then all women's Board of Northwestern Hospital. With Dr. R.T. LaVake as mentor, she became active in the early days of Planned Parenthood of Minneapolis. She was a long-time member of the Lake Minnetonka Garden Club and a major benefactor of education, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota Orchestra which played its first concert on the same day as the twins' birthday, as noted at its 100th anniversary. She was an honorary trustee and major supporter of the Schepens Eye Institute of Boston and funded the DeWalt and Marie Ankeny Director of Research position at the Institute.

With her twin Pinkie, she shared a love of flowers, especially roses and orchids. She and Pinkie also were world-wide travelers with their friend and guide, Daniel O'Keefe Browning. London, especially Claridges Hotel, was a special place, as were India, Burma, Bali, Rome and Florence. With Pinkie and her children and grandchildren, she loved fly fishing at Silver Tip Ranch in Montana and from her dock on Lake Minnetonka with bacon and a bamboo pole. The family is deeply grateful to the dedicated people of the Methodist Hospital Hospice Services and to all the loyal staff who cared for her in her home for so many years.

A memorial service will be held at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 36th and Hennepin Avenue, Mpls at 2 PM on Monday, December 20. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Foundation for the Marie H. Ankeny and Theodora H. Lang Memorial Garden, 3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, Minn. or The Schepens Eye Research Institute, 20 Staniford Street, Boston. David Lee Funeral Home, Wayzata.
