First wife was Margaret F. Summers, b. 1835 in Illinois, daughter of John Summers and Virginia Watson. She died after 1880. At the time of James Madison Doolen's death, he was married to a woman named Bettie, whom he married in 1887 in Navarro Co., Texas, according to her pension application.

Mr. Doolen was a Private in the 20th Texas Cavalry in Company H. He served under in Indian Territory confronting the Union forces till the end of the war. Mr. Doolen has a new Confederate VA headstone placed on his grave by the Sons of Confederate Veterans for his service to his country.
