Luis Mauro Solis-Rodriguez
1935 - 2022

Early Life: Luis was born February 8, 1935, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to the late Luis Angel Solis and Haydeé Mercedes Rodriguez de Solis. The second of four siblings.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: At 18, he was conscripted into the Ecuadorian Army. When Luis turned 20, his dad helped him get a job at El Telegrafo. He worked his way up and soon started his career as a Linotype machine operator. Walking to and from work, he met the love of his life, "his socia", Leonor Solis. They were married on November 3, 1956. Later, Luis, Leonor, and their three daughters were sealed in the Los Angeles California Temple for time and all eternity in February 1980. In 1967, at age 32, he continued his career as a sports reporter for El Universo, the largest daily newspaper in Ecuador, retiring after 12 years.
❦ Luis was always on the move as a natural-born athlete. He brought this love of sports to his children, and later, his grandchildren. From taking his wife to boxing matches and fútbol games on dates, to waking up before sunrise to teach his daughters how to properly swim and dive at the Olympic pool, athletics was paramount. As a skilled and passionate amateur soccer player, he would drop everything and join in on any game in progress. Even if he was in a suit and tie! He was super competitive and loved to cheer on his son at basketball, as well as his grandchildren in baseball, swimming, basketball, and soccer. In his later years, he could always be seen going on his daily three-mile walk around the neighborhood.
❦ Luis also sought out adventure, having a love for travel. With his young daughters and wife, they frequently traveled to Mexico, Colombia, and Peru. Later on, with his son and wife, they often traveled to Ecuador and Hawaii, which would later lead to his love of Hawaiian shirts. His biggest adventure came when his family of five at the time, moved to the United States, first to Burbank, California, where they welcomed a son. Soon after, they moved to Orem and finally settled in Provo, Utah.
❦ As the patriarch of his family, he led as an example of church service and Christlike love. Being one of the early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints families in Ecuador, he served as one of the first branch presidents for the area. His leadership and dedication to his calling would lead to the first temple in Ecuador to be built in Guayaquil.
❦ To his grandchildren, "Papito" was a kind, smiling presence. Always sneaking them a five-dollar bill or a caramelo, he loves each one of them with all of his heart.
❦ Luis Mauro Solis, of Provo, Utah, passed away January 14, 2022, following complications of emergency surgery. He was surrounded by loved ones, including his sweetheart of 65 years. He was 86.
Family Message: "Luis will be greatly missed and his life will be cherished..."
Survived By: His wife, Leonor Solis; his daughters: Beatriz Smith (Gary), Ann Maynez (Alex), Roxy Gleed (Michael), his son, Mauricio Solis (McKenna); ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
