Maria lived on the 19th floor of the building, with her husband and their dog, Lewis. When the fire broke out, the couple were told to stay inside the building; they remained there for over three hours, until the smoke became unbearable. Maria's husband threw a towel over her head, a towel over their dog, and tried to push their way out of the building. Rescue workers were able to grab Maria and her husband, but were forced to leave the dog behind; Maria had to be carried out of the building by firefighters.
Even after escaping, Maria suffered terribly from burns and smoke inhalation. She spent seven months in the hospital before suffering a stroke and dying, a direct consequence of her injuries. Her husband said: "Pily was a colourful, flamboyant and loving person who sadly left us on the January 29 and I would encourage you to reflect that in your attire on the day."
"Maria del Pilar Burton, known as Pily, shared a 19th-floor apartment with her husband, Nick, to whom she had been married for 34 years. They were rescued on the night of the fire, but Pily, who suffered from previous health complications, remained in hospital for months and died on 29 January.
She was finally recognised as the 72nd victim of the fire on the eve of the public inquiry.
Her husband asked for his privacy to be respected, but wrote in a statement: "Pily was well known in our community, she was what people call a real character. A character in the best sense of the word – she was flamboyant, colourful, passionate and friendly.
"Everyone on Portobello Road knew her and when we went to the market on the weekend she would stop and chat all the way along. She had such a big heart. We were together for 34 years. She was the love of my life.""
