Clara Lucinda Bowers was the daughter of George Washington and Louvina (Rogers) Bowers; she was born on Feb 14, 1879, in Decker Township of Richland County, Illinois.
She married Luther Benjamin Long, a farmer, on Dec 28, 1897, in Richland County, Illinois.
They were the parents of 9 children, 1 daughter and 8 sons.

Clara lost her husband and 3 year old son Hershel as a result of 2 different tragic accidents, and her oldest son Earl also preceded her in death.

In spite of all this, Clara always seemed cheerful. She was a little women, never weighing more than 97 pounds, and always energetic. She did a lot of canning of fruits and vegetables for her family. She and her children gathered hickory nuts by the wagon load. These were sold to give her money for crochet thread and other fancy work materials. Her hands were never idle, for even as she listened to the radio, she was busy crocheting and tatting.

The Longs lived near the Little Wabash River where there was plenty of hunting and fishing, and they all grew up liking those activities.
