192 Trooper A Bawden, Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. Volunteered for service during the Second Anglo Boer War, joining the regiment when it was raised at Pietermaritzburg by Major A W Thorneycroft of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. By the middle of Nov 1899 the Corps had reached a strength of 500. Their first engagement was outside Mooi River on 22 Nov 1899 and they fought at the Battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Spion Kop on 23/24 Jan 1900, at Vaal Krantz on 5-6 Feb 1900 and at the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900, the final break in battle for the relief of Ladysmith. Following the recuperation period after the relief of Ladysmith, they were part of the advance north from Ladysmith into the Transvaal and were at Laing's Nek 2-9 Jun 1900 and then remained in the vicinity of the Natal-Pretoria Railway. Trooper Bawden was killed in action near the Waterval River, close to Val, north west of Standerton, Transvaal. He was buried at Val Station. His remains were later reinterred at Standerton.
