William was born to James FREETH and Christiana BROOKS. He was in trouble from an early age, including two months imprisonment and a whipping at 12 years of age in 1843 for larceny.

William married Matilda CURTIS on 29 June 1857 in the Parish Church, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England. They had two children, Joseph, born in 1857 and George, born in 1860.

William was convicted of many crimes, including stealing sheep and larceny. His last offence was stealing a horse which resulted in him being sentenced on 20 October 1864 in Cardiff to 10 years transportation to Western Australia's penal colony.

William arrived at Fremantle, Western Australia, on the convict ship "BELGRAVIA" on 4 July 1866. He was given his Ticket of Leave on 10 March 1870 and his Certificate of Freedom on 7 April 1875.

In early December 1876, William left Mrs Toovey's residence on Albany Road (Albany Hwy) to hunt kangaroos. His horse and dog returned the next day without William. On 1 January 1877, his body was found. 5 miles from home. An inquest concluded he died from natural causes.

William never saw his wife and children again.
