Iva Mae Sanford of Santa Maria went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at a Santa Barbara care center.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Iva was born to Robert F. and Cordelia Lee Martin March 4, 1913, in Nowata, Okla. She married Clyde W. Bedford Jan. 12, 1929, starting life together in Coffeyville, Kan. The couple had two daughters, Lois Clydine and Beverly Mae. The family moved to California in 1945. Iva's years were happily spent as a loving homemaker. Clyde Bedford died in 1961 in Santa Maria.

Always loving and caring, Iva supplemented her living as a caregiver for several disabled ladies. Later, she managed the restaurants at Elkhorn and Rancho Maria golf clubs.

In 1983 Iva married Vernard Burr Sanford in Norwalk and enjoyed 15 happy years at their home in Santa Maria until Vern's passing in 1998 after a long illness. In spite of two bouts with cancer, Iva was in good health until advanced dementia ruled her life. Her last few months were spent at Villa Bella in Santa Barbara where she was lovingly cared for by the staff who ensured her passing was gentle and pain free. Her family and many friends loved her dearly and will miss her continual happy smile.

Iva is survived by her daughters, Clydine and husband John Watt of Paso Robles and Beverly and husband Bob Nelson of Santa Maria; grandchildren, Rick Springer and wife Boots of Littleton, Colo., Randy Springer and wife Ann of Lake Lopez, Danny and Vickie Ray of Bakersfield and Debi Lapinski of Santa Maria; sole surviving sister Jewel Garrison of Coffeyville; life-long friend Margurite Tipton of Oak Harbor, Wash.; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to the Santa Barbara Hospice Partners, or the Alzheimer's Association.
