Photographer, Illustrator. Best-remembered for his UK architectural pictures & studies. Born Mark Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes in Dalton, Northumberland, England, the oldest of five children to industrialist, Maurice Fiennes and Sylvia Joan Finlay Fiennes. Maurice was knighted by the Queen of England for his exporting of British engineering products. His third cousin is Sir Ranulph Fiennes. He attended Eton College before glomerulonephritis forced him to leave. He improved his health by going to New Zealand, Australia and America where he studied architecture at college. He returned home to England finding work as a farming tenant on the Earl of Stradbroke estate in Blythburgh, Suffolk where he met Jennifer Lash. They married in 1962 and they had seven children together. Jennifer's love of art inspired Mark to take up photography at age 40. His photographs have been exhibited in some of the most esteemed museums and British estates. He was granted permission in 1985 by the Washington, D.C.-based National Gallery of Art to take pictures for the Treasure Houses of Britain exhibit. Fiennes also photographed the restoration of Windsor Castle for Royal Collections. Outside of photography, he received further work illustrating books for Random House, Harper Collins, Thames & Hudson, Yale University Press and various publishers. From 1983 until 1995, he contributed photographs to Country Life magazine. Five of his children would make their career in the entertainment/arts world, most notably their sons: Ralph Fiennes and Joseph Fiennes became actors on both stage and screen. He died in 2004.
