Maria was a daughter of David Guyer (1807-1901) and Elizabeth Rife (1812-1877). She was married to Joseph Thomson (1827-1902), a shoe and boot maker, as well as the postmaster in New Aberdeen, a small settlement in Waterloo Township (now part of south Kitchener, Ontario).
Maria and Joseph Thomson had five known children:
- Margaret (1852-1892)
- Thomas (1855-1929)
- Elizabeth (1857-1944)
- John (1861-1935)
- Robert (1863-1863)
Maria died on December 17, 1863, twelve days after giving birth to Robert. The infant died six days after Maria's death.
