James Thomas Whitley was born on April 9, 1846 in Antioch, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Isaac "Jack" Whitley (ca 1825– ) and and his 2nd wife Temperance "Tempy" (Wolfe) Whitley (ca 1816–1883).

He was married on January 12, 1873 in Rutherford County to Mary Duffle (1845-1929), the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Duffle and Eliza (Below) Duffle.

A farmer and resident of Antioch, he had been in failing health for a year and was confined for a week at the home of his son Ben F Whitley at 258 Hermitage Avenue, Nashville and 86 years old when he passed away on November 2, 1932.

Survivors included sons T C Whitley of Antioch and Ben F Whitley in Nashville and daughters Mrs W G Watson of Nashville, Mrs R A Morton in Antioch and Mrs L R Rieves at Chicago, Illinois.

Funeral Services were held on November 3rd at Roesch-Johnson-Charlton Funeral Home, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
