Thomas Charleton Whitley was born on May 31, 1879 in Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of James Thomas Whitley (1846–1932) and Mary (Duffle) Whitley (1845–1929).

He was married 1st about 1901 to Emma Elizabeth "Lizzie" Woodall (ca 1885- ). He was married 2nd on September 21, 1924 as the 1st husband of Louella Eliza "Lisa" (Seat) (Whitley) Nellums (1897–1982).

A retired well drilling contractor living on Rural Route 2 out of Antioch in the Couchville area of Davidson County, Thomas was about 84 years old and married when he died on May 31, 1964 at Saint Thomas Hospital after being ill for a few days.

Survivors included his widow Louella, sons Norman Whitley and Leslie Whitley of Antioch, Tennessee, Douglas Whitley in Nashville and Calvin Whitley and Robert Whitley at La Veregne, Tennessee, daughters Mrs Sadie Scruggs and Mrs Cordelia Wallace in Antioch and Mrs Dorothy Geater of Stutgart, Arkansas, sisters Mrs Maggie Morton of Antioch and Mrs Annabelle Young in Nashville, brother Ben F Whitley in Nashville, eighteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on June 2nd at Walter King Hoover Funeral Home in Smyrna, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
