In 1851, James was still in Greenhill, Oldham, when he was shown as mayor and alderman. He was the 2nd mayor for the town from 1850-1852. He and his wife moved to Kinnerton Lodge with their son, James who was granted his father's probate, valued at under £25,000.
An article in the Oldham Chronicle 16 Jun 2009, described the sale of Kinnerton Lodge and its contents following the death of James' granddaughter, Wenda Collinge. Wenda married Erich Fischer in 1963, a German POW at Tarporley who had stayed in England and helped her mother to run the Lodge after the war. Wenda died in 2006, aged 92, and Erich died in July 2008:
