Carol Swanson Price, 84, passed away surrounded by her loving family on November 23, 2021, after a valiant battle with cancer. She was a woman known for having a special way of bringing people together through her warm and welcoming entertaining. Carol expressed her exquisite taste and passion for beauty through her love of flowers, the comfortable homes she created, and stylish attire. She devotedly worked in support of the arts, medicine and Anglo-American cultural organizations.

Mrs. Price was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to W. Clarke Swanson and Florence Peterson Swanson. Her grandfather, Carl Swanson, who emigrated from Sweden, as a young man, founded Swanson's Foods in 1945, run by Carol's father and uncle Gilbert Swanson. They innovated the Swanson chicken pot pie and invented the iconic TV dinner, which became a part of the American cultural lexicon.

Carol attended the Brownell Talbot school in Omaha, and later Stanford University, majoring in art history and political science. In 1969, she married Charles H. Price II (Charlie), a U.S. businessman who later became the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium (1981-1983) and U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James's in London (1983-1989).

During the years in London, Mrs. Price, as the wife of the U.S. Ambassador, worked tirelessly with her husband to represent the U.S. Government in an elegant and fitting way. At Winfield House, the Ambassador's residence, Mrs. Price entertained politicians, members of the Royal Family, and a range of British society from all walks of life, including actors, writers, historians, business executives and trade union leaders.

While in London, she was actively involved in a wide range of cultural organizations that supported British theater, music and dance, such as serving as President of the American Friends of Covent Garden. Mrs. Price co-founded the Foundation for Preservation of Art in Embassies, the leading non-profit organization dedicated to providing permanent works of American art for U.S. embassies worldwide. Carol also supported The American Museum in Britain and served on the Sotheby's International Advisory Board and the Board of the Savoy Group of Hotels.

Following their life in London, Ambassador and Mrs. Price returned home to Kansas City, where over the years Mrs. Price served on the boards of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Philharmonic, Children's Mercy Hospital, the Missouri Arts Council, and participated in the Madison Council of The Library of Congress, and on Committees of the National Endowment for the Arts. Mrs. Price loyally supported The Salvation Army, and together with her husband received the organizations prestigious William Booth Award.

In 2004, the Prices moved to California, dividing their time between residences in Los Angeles and Indian Wells. In California, Carol was a member of the Board of the Eisenhower Medical Center and its Foundation, as well as the Board of Overseers of The Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Mrs. Price was preceded in death by husband in 2012. She is survived by daughters Caroline Swanson Price (formerly McCallister); Melissa Price Carlson and husband Buckley Carlson; son Charles H. Price III and wife Drusiana. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Elena and Max McCallister, Charles Carlson and Solaia and Falco Price; her brother and sister-in-law, Clarke and Elizabeth Swanson; sister-in-law Frances Swanson, and by much loved nieces and nephews.

There will be a family graveside service in Kansas City, Missouri. Later this winter there will be a memorial service in Indian Wells, California.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation, 39000 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270; the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley, CA 93065; or Stanford University, P. O. Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309-0466.
