At home, Ruth and her late husband, Caldwell County Sheriff S. Ray Moore, were
fun-loving and enjoyed playing card games, especially Canasta, with their children and extended family and friends. Ruth continued this tradition after Ray's death, teaching their grandchildren and the great grandchildren, Pinochle, Rook, Rummikub and Yahtzee, among other games.
Bright, encouraging and kind, Ruth was an alumna of Asheville Normal and Teacher's College. She became a teacher at Gamewell School at a time when many women didn't work outside the home. Ruth taught fourth grade for 32 years, and along the way, coached basketball, drove a school bus, served on the Parent Teacher Association, and later was actively involved in the Caldwell County Retired School Personnel.
Adventurous and spirited, Ruth enjoyed traveling and had visited 48 American states, all but North Dakota and Alaska, as well as parts of Canada. She was an avid sports fan, and she most loved watching UNC Tarheels basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Ruth was a lifelong member of Lenoir's Littlejohn United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir, served in the nursery, taught Vacation Bible School, baked chicken pot pies with the United Methodist Women, and served cups of hot chocolate at their annual Christmas Trail. Ruth's Christian service extended to the community, where she served Meals on Wheels to elderly and shut-in neighbors well into her nineties.
Those left to cherish her memory include three sons, Ken Moore and wife Charlene of Winchester, VA, Barry Moore and wife Kim and Jeff Moore and wife Shannon, all of Lenoir; two daughters, Donna Hartley and husband David of Lenoir and Vicki Yates and husband John of Fleetwood, NC; one sister, Loyce Winkler of Panama City Beach, FL; nine grandchildren, Rebecah Shepherd and husband Ray, Kim Rhodes, Derek and Dustin Hartley, Heidi Hodges and husband Darin, Haley Childers and husband Mike, Shelby Rae, Lauren and Nathan Moore; twelve great-grandchildren, Anna Grace, Lily and Luke Shepherd, Matthew and Natalie Rhodes, Madison Endianna, Caley Rae and Wyatt Hartley, Addin and Yates Hodges and Caroline and Jake Childers; and her lifelong friend and college roommate, Mary Margaret Deyton of Mars Hill, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Littlejohn United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Richard Irwin.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Childers, Derek Hartley, Dustin Hartley, Darin Hodges, John Moore III, Nathan Moore, and Matthew Rhodes.
Due to Covid-19 masks and social distancing will be required.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Kindred at Home, Amorem Hospice, and her beloved caregivers, Barbara Bolick, Martha Bowers, Paris Jenkins, Betty Marcum, Melissa Pearson, Faye Phillips and Judy Walker for the love and care provided to Mrs. Moore.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Littlejohn UMC, PO Box 447, Lenoir, NC 28645.
